Just because a player is on the staff team, it doesn't and SHOULDN'T entitle them to any type of special treatment. I've spent a long time on the staff team and have lost a lot of items, bases, and etc. and I would never expect that stuff to be given back to me especially when it would never happen for a player who wasn't a staff member.
