Not my typical redstone farm as this requires more manual input than is preferred.
Thankfully we can plant azalea saplings on any dirt which makes this much easier. The machine needs a few things to keep it running and this means more manual work in preparation for use. Gather some azalea saplings, dirt, and a large supply of bonemeal.
The required redstone is minimal considering the amount of things being done while the machine is in use. The redstone blocks used ; 3 dispensers, 2 pistons, 1 sticky piston, 2 observers, 1 pressure plate, and 1 button. The dirt and azalea saplings go in the 2 dispensers that have the button. 1 for dirt and 1 for the saplings. The other dispenser holds the bone meal.
This is the heart of the rooted dirt factory. When stepping on the pressure plate the observer clock begins ticking and bone meal is ready to dispense. This clock will continue until you step off the pressure plate, but will not use bonemeal unless there is something that can be bonemealed in front of the dispenser.
Click the button once you are on the pressure plate to collect 1 dirt and 1 sapling. Place the dirt on the piston head and then the sapling on the dirt. The machine will make a rooted dirt block and grow a tree. Next hit the button to get another dirt and sapling, as well as activate the 2 pistons to push the rooted dirt and 1 oak log out of the way. Repeat by placing the dirt then the sapling, hitting the button once the tree grows.
Optional dual piston wall to push the row of rooted dirt and logs to somewhere for you to deal with later. Perhaps a tnt drop and collection area under. Speaking of tnt, I did rig up a tnt dupe to explode the leaves and logs above, but it was a mess to collect anything so manual harvesting was easiest. Eff V hoe or shears makes short work of cleaning up the leaves to get more saplings.
Now for some footnotes of things I noticed during the construction of this machine;
*The 3x3 area above the heart of this build needs to be free of any blocks except the very center, (the tree itself). If obstructed in that area a new tree will never grow. This is not a problem that the machine creates while using.
*The Azalea trees themselves can take up a space of 13x13x8
There is no need to clean up the leaves and logs if you have enough saplings and dirt to keep running the machine. It does not jam up.
,
This is not super fast but it does make rooted dirt a lot easier to obtain. Some would say this is the hardest block in Minecraft to gather in large quantities. It just got easier today.
Hope this helps, have fun out there.
*speaking of fun - next idea I thought of is a Drip leaf Spleef battle arena with interactable sabotage devices, (target blocks with dispenser to shoot random projectiles), different elevations of platforms to traverse,(Parkour), and a bravest warrior reward item, (risky to obtain but OP for the fight, like a throwable lingering potion of slowing) - perhaps team play. *ammo - players get unlimited snow balls, which they can target drip leaves or sabotage devices, (hit the target block). The bravest warrior item location should be in the center, making the player an easy target, but the reward is worth it.
*this is a huge undertaking and so I put it to the Foxcraft team to make this happen.
