New Player with a few questions! Help needed

I want to get started in survival, but I'm confused on how the claim land feature works. How do I protect my land in the beginning or do I really have to somehow get $1000 before I can claim even a single block of land....?

I also joined the hunter job class. Was wondering if I still got payed if I (let's say) killed a cow that came from a spawner?
 
Scrap the first question. I figured out the answer to that. If someone could help with the second question though, that would be much appreciated!
 
I play Kingdoms so I'm not 100% sure if it's different over there, but from what I've seen anything that comes out of a spawner does NOT count toward your jobs. They have to be natural spawned.
